| Bio: | I am an attorney specializing in environmental law. I have worked in both law firms and as corporate counsel. I write columns for my Idaho city's daily newspaper. I am a retired Air Force JAG Corps Lt. Colonel. I have been married over 33 years, and we have 3 grown children and 8 grandchildren. I was born in Japan and grew up in Utah. I have a math degree, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi from the University of Utah; a Juris Doctor degree from the University's College of Law, and was an associate editor of the law review (I was honored for being among the First 50 minority members admitted to the Utah State Bar); and a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in environmental law from George Washington University, Washington, DC, interning at the Pentagon and with the President's Council on Environmental Quality. I am admitted to practice law in Idaho, Utah, California, and Washington. I learned Japanese, working in Japan 2 years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1969-71), and three years at the Fifth Air Force legal office in Tokyo (1980-83). I worked 2 years as a software engineer for the NORAD Space Defense Center inside Cheyenne Mountain (where the Stargate is kept), at Colorado Springs, CO. We have also lived in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC; Omaha, NE; San Francisco Bay area; and Richland, WA. I have spent days to weeks working in Guam, Hawaii, Alabama, New Mexico, New York, Alaska, Maine, Nevada, Missouri, and dozens of other states. I have taught college courses for UC Berkeley, St. Mary's College of California, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Maryland (Tokyo), Utah Valley State College, and University of Idaho. I have organized and taught over a hundred professional education courses for attorneys in dozens of cities around the US from 1985 to the present. My work has involved the environmental impacts of nuclear weapons and nuclear waste, hazardous chemical waste and Superfund cleanup, air and water pollution, endangered species and cultural resources protection, and environmental impact assessment (including over 150 NEPA studies). I have written published articles on, for example: emergency exemptions to environmental laws in wartime and disasters, controlling pollution of outer space, Federal agency liability for cleanup under the Superfund Act, the civilianization and land transfer of closing military bases, and how Mormon Church courts operated as the de facto court system in Utah before statehood in 1896. | |||||||
